This year is the thirteenth consecutive year of the internationally recognised World Autism Awareness Week. Each year it encourages people to raise awareness of Autism. Worldwide, people hold fundraisers such as bake sales, marathons and even skydives!
However, with the difficult times we are currently facing with COVID-19 and a lot of the world on lockdown or being advised to stay safe by staying at home, we need to get creative about how we’re going to spread the word about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This year why not set up a coffee and cakes chit-chat with friends and family through a webcam app or have a sign up in your window of the Autism Awareness Puzzle ribbon, or create and share more awareness posts on social media?
A lot of people have heard about Autism but there is still a lot of misunderstanding around the condition in the general public, and sometimes there is still a negative view on the condition. During this week we believe it is important to raise awareness and facts about Autism. We at Jobskin know there are many positives to having Autism. One impressive characteristic is the person’s attention to detail and thoroughness around specific details, a quality desired in many jobs. Often, people with Autism can retain and absorb information with incredible recall and long-term memory as well as having exceptional expertise and in-depth knowledge in a specific field. There are so many other positives to having Autism that it’s impossible to list them all. This year get online, call your friends and family, put drawings in your window, spread the word of Autism to show how amazing it can be, and spread the facts! Let’s raise awareness together!
