When you have a child with autism, planning a day out can be challenging. In this edition of the Medigarments Ltd blog, we look at some of the UK's best attractions that offer an autism-friendly experience.
Cinemas
Most major cinema chains (including Showcase, Vue, Cineworld, Everyman and ODEON) now offer autism-friendly screenings of the latest movies. During the screening, there are several adaptations that make the environment more accessible for children with autism and other conditions which cause sensory processing difficulties. These adaptations can include leaving the cinema lights on during the film, reducing the volume level and leaving out trailers and advertisements. Check your local cinema's websites for full details.
Diggerland
Giving children the unique opportunity to ride and operate different types of construction vehicles and machinery, Diggerland theme parks can be found in Yorkshire, Durham, Devon and Kent. As one of the first organisations to team up with the national 'Connect to Autism' campaign, Diggerland provides its staff with special autism training and some of the venues even have a dedicated sensory room. Registered carers are admitted free of charge.
ThinkTank Science Museum
Located in Birmingham, the award-winning ThinkTank museum boasts more than 200 interactive exhibits, a state-of-the-art planetarium and a range of historical collections spread out across four floors. As well as holding regular quiet sessions, the museum offers free ear defenders and unlimited use of its relaxing sensory room.
Inflata Nation
With ten locations all over the UK, Inflata Nation is a uniquely-exciting theme park packed with slides, trampolines, ball pools and much more. All of the venues host regular autism-friendly events, during which the number of participants is reduced by 50%, the music volume is kept low and parents/carers are admitted without charge. After the session, all participants can enjoy complimentary refreshments.
Dynamic compression aids restlessness
Medigarments Ltd strongly believes in enabling people with autism, ADHD and related conditions to take part in all of the activities enjoyed by neurotypical people and we recognise that this involves helping to reduce the negative impacts of these conditions. One of the most effective solutions we have created is the Sensory Hug®, part of the SDO® (Sensory Dynamic Orthosis) range which, made using dynamic LYCRA® and Orthowrap™, delivers continuous and consistent pressure and provides sensory and proprioceptive feedback to the wearer. This therapeutic pressure provides numerous benefits, from reducing restlessness to increasing stability and much more besides.
Sensory Hug® Mini in Bulldog |
The Sensory Hug® is effective for sensory seeking individuals, with conditions such as:
- Autism
