Burn Prevention: Do Things Right this Bonfire Night!

Article---Oct-2024-Bonfire-NightOver 400 years ago on November the 5th in the year 1605, a group of people planned to assassinate King James I along with his entire parliament. Barrels of explosives were secretly placed underneath the House of Lords and a man named Guy Fawkes was left to guard them until the planned time for detonation. Thankfully, the Gunpowder Plot (as it came to be known) was foiled, the explosives were disarmed and Fawkes was arrested, charged with treason and subsequently hanged.

After the failure of the Gunpowder plot, many people in London spontaneously lit bonfires to celebrate the survival of their beloved king. The act became a tradition, with the same thing happening every year on the same date as Fawkes's arrest and, though those events are so distant in time, the tradition remains as strong as ever to this day.

While Bonfire Night and the accompanying fireworks are without doubt exciting, especially for children, there are obvious dangers. Thousands of people of all ages suffer tragic burns during the early part of November, many of which can leave behind scars. If you're planning a Bonfire Night celebration then we urge you make it as safe as possible. Here we present some safety tips to help you do just that.

If you're having a bonfire, make sure that all of your windows and doors are closed before lighting it. Use the driest materials you can find as those that are damp will produce excessive smoke; as well as potentially being toxic, such smoke can also impair visibility and make accidents more likely. Choose an open area to situate the bonfire, making sure that it is nowhere near anything that could catch fire like a fence, shed or tree.

Don't be over ambitious when it comes to size! Build the bonfire nice and small, surrounding it with a ring of stones to keep it under control. Ensure that you have a large bucket of water or hosepipe to hand in case of emergencies. It is absolutely crucial not to use flammable liquids like petrol or lighter fluid to get the fire started as these can react explosively. Never leave the bonfire unattended and spray plenty of water on the embers at the end of the celebration.

When it comes to fireworks, you should only choose those that carry the CE symbol of quality. Keep the fireworks in a sealed box and only take one out at a time. Always read the instructions fully and comply with them to the letter. Boxes of fireworks will contain a safety taper so be sure to use this instead of a naked flame. If a firework fails to go off then don't return to it: the fuse may be longer than you think! With rockets and other aerial fireworks, make sure that they are directed right away from the spectators and that there are no obstructions that will impede their progress.
