The start of a new year is a time for looking to the future but its also a time for looking back on the past. In this edition of the Medigarments Ltd blog, we look at some of the things that people with certain disabilities and neurological differences may have struggled with over the past few weeks.

Shopping is notoriously difficult and this can be further magnified for people with disabilities. Many wheelchair users reported problems with access to stores; even those stores which are generally regarded as accessible became much less so because of large crowds of people. Not all stores have disabled toilet facilities. Markets Can be particularly crowded and many had narrow walkways between the stalls that were difficult to access for those in wheelchairs or with otherwise impaired mobility.
Going out to a pub, bar or club is a popular way of celebrating but can be challenging for people with disabilities. Leonard Cheshire, a disability charity, undertook an in-depth study into this phenomenon. The key takeaway was that an overwhelming 86% of disabled respondents to the survey had faced difficulties accessing entertainment venues. Many issues were cited, from a lack of step-free access and disabled toilet facilities to inconvenient layouts and bar heights. Shockingly, people with disabilities frequently experienced negative attitudes from staff and other customers, at 46% and 35% of respondents respectively.
It is well known that autistic people are often over stimulated by the flashing lights that are seen everywhere during the festive season; such lighting can also cause people with epilepsy to suffer a seizure. Fireworks launched to celebrate the start of the new year can also have a similar effect.
