Inspirational Achievers with Cerebral Palsy

Article - Feb 2024 Cerebral PalsyIn this edition of the Medigarments Ltd blog, we'll be sharing the stories of three young people with cerebral palsy who have recently hit the headlines for their remarkable achievements.

Carroll on the Cobbles!
Back in 2013, 14-year-old Jack Carroll shot to fame when he appeared on the TV show 'Britain's Got Talent' performing a hilarious stand-up comedy act in which he talked about his experiences of having cerebral palsy. He made it all the way to the final show, becoming runner-up after being narrowly beaten to the win by theatre group Attraction.

That certainly wasn't the end of the story, as Jack went on to write and perform a short comedy film for the BBC, embarked on a live tour with his stand-up act and also appeared alongside Johnny Vegas in the film 'Eaten by Lions' (see image above). Jack's career is set to continue on an upward trajectory as he has recently been cast in 'Coronation Street' and will soon be back on our screens.

Burt-Rickman

Burt's Brilliant Book
At the age of just 19 years old, Burt Rickman has written and published his 'warts and all' autobiography. Entitled 'No Half Measures', the moving book describes the horrific bullying Burt endured at school due to his cerebral palsy as well as charting how he overcame the trauma to become a successful gym instructor.

In addition to these achievements, Burt is also an accomplished trumpet player. He proudly rides a 125cc motorbike, despite having been told at a young age by medical professionals that it was unlikely he would even be able to ride a pushbike!

Dancer Defies Disability
20-year-old Eilidh Elizabeth Molly McGrath has been honoured with a special award for her dancing and choreography talents. The award was presented at an arts festival in Chennai, India earlier this month and acknowledged her outstanding contribution to an international project called 'Proximus'.

The ground breaking project saw young disabled artists from all over the world collaborating remotely to create films that explored 'aspects of identity and experiences of disability'. Commenting on her work, Eilidh said: "Hopefully some little girl with a disability will see our film and realise that she can also dance. It shows not only that wheelchair users can dance together with non-wheelchair users, but also that this can be beautiful."
