Kathleen Devonne's Story
Big Sales Increase for Charity Lottery A woman from Canada has created a huge spike in the number of tickets sold for a lottery, the proceeds of which are used to support burn survivors. Kathleen Devonne, who hails from Maple Ridge in British Columbia, shared her story and urged readers to purchase tickets.
In 2021, Kathleen sustained second and third-degree burns to over 60% of her body during a car fire. Her road to recovery has been slow and difficult, entailing five months of treatment in an intensive care unit followed by multiple surgeries and physical therapy.
Proceeds from the Hometown Heroes lottery are used to support a range of services and survivor programmes across the province, including at Vancouver General Hospital, the University of British Columbia Hospital and the British Columbia Professional Fire Fighters Burn Fund.
Shamiam Arif's Story
From Untreatable to Unbeatable! At the tender age of just six months old, Shamiam Arif sustained horrific burns to 70% of her body, including her hands and face. The cause of the burns was a fire which started when a candle fell into her cot at her home in the Kashmir region of India. Shamiam was rushed to hospital but it did not have the facilities to treat such severe injuries. Medical staff described her condition as 'untreatable' and she was not expected to survive the harrowing ordeal.
Supported by the Muslim Hands charity, members of Shamiam's family who live in the UK began raising money through an awareness campaign, eventually collecting enough to bring the injured girl to the specialist burns unit at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford. There, doctors were able to rebuild her face, arms and skull, along with giving her multiple skin grafts.
Now living in Luton, Shamiam recently graduated from the University of Hertfordshire, achieving a 2:1 BA degree in film production. As she begins building a career "doing what [she] loves the most", Shamiam spends her spare time raising funds to build a specialist burns facility at the hospital back in Kashmir.

ScarSil® Silicone Scar Gel from Medigarments Ltd |
ScarSil® Topical Gel
ScarSil® is especially suitable for facial and smaller scars. Like Scar Fx® silicone sheet, the product should only be used after wounds have healed. Easy to apply and especially gentle, ScarSil® is recommended for children and those who have sensitive skin. As ScarSil® offers flexibility, it can be used successfully on the moving parts of the body.
ScarSil® Should be used 2-4 times each day, until the scar is mature and there is visible improvement. Applied in a thin layer, ScarSil® dries extremely quickly, creating an airtight, waterproof film. Once the product has fully dried, sun protection and facial cosmetics can be applied over it. Made from 97% pure silicone with added vitamin C, ScarSil® is silky-smooth and totally invisible. The product will both flatten and soften scars, reducing discolouration, discomfort and itchiness.
Both of these survivors prove that with the right care and support, burn survivors can go from untreatable to unbeatable.
