Holleh's Story
In 2009, 13-year-old Holleh sustained third-degree burns to 11% of her body (hands, shoulders, face and neck) after an accident at a family barbecue. She spent several weeks in an intensive care unit and underwent many hours of critical operations. Describing the aftermath, Holleh said: "I felt my life and my future had been ripped away from me."
For a long time after her accident, Holleh was treated for her burns and scars with massage, physiotherapy, silicone gel and pressure garments. Despite the difficult recovery, she remained motivated and completed her GCSEs. She graduated from university in 2019 and is working as a doctor today. "My burns don’t dominate my life any more, they’re something that happened to me but they aren’t the focus of my life," she said.
Tilly's Story
Tilly was just 18 months of age when she accidentally pulled a kettle of boiling water onto herself, sustaining severe burns to 33% of her body. She spent two months in hospital after the injury and received several skin grafts. Throughout her childhood, Tilly's visible scars made her feel anxious and withdrawn. "When I was little I really struggled to speak to anybody, I would be reluctant to make friends or participate in any social activity," she said.
Young Tilly had a passion for caring for animals, and this continued throughout her life. She now works for a zoo, where she gives educational presentations about a host of different animal species. Her presentations are attended by large groups of people and her audiences have even included big celebrity names like Heather Small, Peter Andre and members of the pop groups S Club and Union J.
Al's Story
After unwisely choosing to use petrol to start a fire, 26-year-old Al was engulfed in a fireball that caused severe burns to 26% of his body. During his recovery, which involved weeks of intensive care and a skin graft operation, Al described himself as feeling 'anxious, knocked-off course, regretful for doing something so reckless and guilty for the effect it was having on family and loved ones.'
Al was supported emotionally by other burn survivors and charities such as the Adult Burns Support Group and Dan's Fund for Burns. He returned to work just six months after his accident and soon became a qualified architect. Al now runs his own architectural practice and is a proud father and husband.
