Inspiring Children with CP

Article - Feb 2024 CP swimCerebral palsy (CP) is a lifelong condition that causes difficulties with movement, coordination and balance. Despite these problems, many people with CP are able to live independently and some go on to achieve remarkable feats, defying all the odds. This edition of the Medigarments Ltd blog showcases two of these people and celebrates their achievements.

The swimming sensation Harry Findlater

Harry Findlater, Swimming Sensation!
Harry Findlater, who comes from Montrose in Scotland, amazed his family and medical professionals by learning to swim just a year after enduring two gruelling surgical procedures on his spine.

Aged just seven years old, Harry's confidence has grown dramatically and he is experiencing a host of emotional, social and physical benefits thanks to his time in the water.

Heather Harrison is a swimming teacher with the Learn to Swim program at ANGUSAlive Montrose pool and she is absolutely delighted with Harry's progress. She commented: "When I first got him, he couldn’t do very much as he had just had his operation on his back, so we had to take it kind of gently. But now he’s managing near enough to swim the whole way across this little pool here. It’s absolutely fantastic."

Aries no longer requires a wheelchair

Aries: Changing the World One Step at a Time
Texan boy Aries, now aged five years old, was born premature at only 23 weeks and weighed just under two pounds. This extremely-early arrival caused Aries to experience a buildup of fluid on his brain, necessitating three separate surgeries.

When he was two months old, Aries became the first child to use a cutting-edge device that was developed by MD Manish Shah and his colleagues at UTHealth Houston and Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital. The device takes the form of a wearable cap that utilises infrared light to allow medical professionals to visualise Aries's brain, giving a real-time picture of how brain bleeds resolve and improve.

In addition to CP, Aries also has epilepsy and autism. Though never expected to be able to walk, Aries recently took his first steps, to the delight and joy of his mum Aisha. She said: "He walked from my dad all the way over to me. I remember just cheering and crying, and just being so happy and proud of him for doing that. It was just a miracle."

The benefits of dynamic compression

Dynamic compression garments can provide an array of therapeutic benefits to people with a wide range of conditions, including CP and autism. Dynamic orthoses are clinically proven to improve function, coordination, muscle tone and proprioception through the provision of dynamic compression. The base suit provides the neurophysiological component by increasing proprioceptive and cutaneous feedback and enhancing normal movement. The reinforcement panels work biomechanically providing musculoskeletal realignment, joint stabilisation and resistance.
