International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2024

Article - Dec 2024 Disabilities DayOn Tuesday the 3rd of December, people from all over the world came together to observe International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), which takes place every year on that date. A campaign created by the United Nations (UN) over three decades ago in 1992, IDPD seeks to raise awareness of and promote understanding about disability across the entire social spectrum.

Each edition of IDPD has a central theme; the theme chosen for 2024 was 'Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future'. General António Guterres, the UN Secretary General, addressed attendees at the IDPD main event at the UN Headquarters in New York on the theme.

Mr Guterres said that the world 'need[s] the leadership of persons with disabilities more than ever', pointing out that such people had for many years played crucial roles as community leaders and change-makers. He said that people with disabilities 'disproportionally bear the brunt of the crises scarring our world' but that they were too often denied 'the right to contribute to solutions to these crises'.

The health sector is of key concern. Data from the World Health Organisation (WHO) show that people with disabilities represent around 16% of the global population yet 'rarely access leadership roles in the health sector'. This has been attributed to many barriers preventing such access, including widespread stigma and discrimination. The WHO has said that it 'recognises that amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities is essential to make meaningful progress in achieving global health goals'.
