Though there has been lots of rain over the past couple of months (typical summertime weather for the UK!), we're sure to have some sunny days on the way. One of the nicest things about summer is having a barbecue; there's not much that can beat the taste of freshly grilled delights eaten in the great outdoors.

The downside of barbecues is that they can be dangerous and the sad fact is that thousands of people sustain barbecue related burn injuries every year, a significant proportion of which are serious enough to warrant hospital treatment. With this in mind, we have put together some tips that can help ensure your summer barbecue is as safe as it can be.
- If you're buying a new barbecue then go for one that is sturdy, strong and stable. If you already have a barbecue then chances are that you haven't used it in a while so make sure it is still in good condition.
- A barbecue should always be placed on a suitable flat surface that is non flammable. Also, you should make sure that it is located well away from sheds, fences, overhanging trees or anything else that could catch fire.
- You should NEVER use accelerants like petrol or methylated spirits to light a barbecue. Some of the most serious accidents occur when people do this as such flammable liquid can easily cause explosive fireballs to form.
- Make sure that you're wearing appropriate clothing: things like long sleeves or apron strings can easily catch fire. Also, use barbecue tools with long handles so that you're as far from the heat as possible.
- Don't leave the barbecue unsupervised even for a moment. If you're in charge of the cooking, avoid becoming intoxicated with alcohol.
- If you have cooked anything in a foil parcel then be very careful when opening it as there may be a sudden release of steam.
- When you've finished, make sure that the barbecue is fully extinguished. Remember that the metal parts of the barbecue can remain hot for a long time even after it has been extinguished so don't touch or move it until you are absolutely certain that it has cooled down.
